Iowa man injured when semi hit by train

CLARKS — An Iowa man was in critical condition at BryanLGH Medical Center West in Lincoln after the semi truck he was driving was struck by a train near Clarks early Thursday morning.
Ival McVey, 63, of Ottumwa, Iowa, had turned a 1990 Freightliner truck and trailer north onto 28 Road from Highway 30 at about 1:22 a.m. Thursday.

The rear wheels of the trailer dropped off the road and got stuck in a culvert. The cab was on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, said Craig Schoneberg, Nebraska State Patrol communications supervisor.

McVey had gotten out of the cab before getting back in to call 911. He was in the cab, and was wearing his seat belt, when the driver’s side was hit by an eastbound train, Schoneberg said.

Why in the world did he get back into the cab? I'd imagine it was cold outside, but grab a jacket and maybe a blanket and get out of there.
